James McNab, was Norval's first settler, an Empire Loyalist from Vermont arrived in 1820. He was a Lieutenant at the Battle of Queenston Heights, and the War of 1812. A historic plaque was unveiled in McNab Park in 1991.

 

 

General Sir Peter Adamson, purchased the sawmill, grist and wollen mills from James McNab in 1838. He fought in the Peninsular War against Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France 1769-1829, received seven gold medals for bravery and distinguished service and was honoured with the "Knight of the Tower and Sword".

 

 

John Wycliffe Lowes Forster, Norval born in 1850 at, Lot 10, Conc. 10 lived until 1938. Renowned portrait painter, many of his works hang in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, Toronto and the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa.

 

 


Dr. Samuel Webster was Norval's doctor for 50 years. He received three gold guineas from Queen Victoria for the safe delivery of the Sharpe triplets. The babies' mother was awarded the Queen's bounty of $15.00.

 

 

Jack Watkins, was born in Norval in 1902 and lived until 1964, was the former Ambassador to Russia. He learned Russian on the family farm from a hired hand. A movie was made about his life called: "Agent of Influence" and a book published with the same title.

 

 


A.J. Casson, Group of Seven artist painted Norval in the 1920's and 30's. He was a relative of Norval's Everett Barnhill family. Original Norval paintings hang at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburgh, Ontario.

 

 

Egbert Charles Reed, married to Marion Elizabeth Noble of Norval, was a famous 19th and 20th century portrait painter, including Mayors of Ontario, and Generals of the Second World War.

 

 

 

Terry Evans, Norval born, Olympic Gold Medalist, Middle Weight Wrestlin, British Empire Games, London, England 1934, now called the Commonwealth Games.

 

 

 

William Morgan Pomeroy, of Norval, received the Louis Bleriot Medal from the Federation Aeronautiqe International in Rome 1977 for establishing a world speed record in a Piston Engined aircraft under 500 kg. over a 3 km closed course.

 

 

Shannon Crawford, Norval's Olympic Gold Medalist rowed to victory as a member of the Women's Eight 1992 crew in Barcelona, Spain. At the world competition in Prague in 1993, her team placed third. After numerous national, gold, and silver titles accomplished Shannon retired from her sport

 

 

David Marvin Carter, Norval born, received a 2005 Blue Planet award from the International Hydropower Association and UNESCO for his Sechelt Creek Hydroelectric Power development in Sechelt, B.C. He was also recognized in 2005 by the Ontario Waterpower Association with the inaugural Ron A. Dodokin Award.
